The SAE competitions were created to give SAE students members an opportunity to apply the knowledge learned   in the classroom to a practical problem. It was created to provide a challenging and educational project to stimulate interest in both  aircraft design and the Society of Automotive Engineers.

AIRCRAFT RESTRICTIONS

Engine: unaltered K & B 10.1 cc glow plug engine. Area Limitations: maximum plan form area 77.5 dm² or (1200 in²). Minimum Cargo: the airplane must lift a mass of 3.63 Kg (8 Ib). Landing: 122 m (400 ft) landing strip. Cargo Bay: 12.69 cm X 15.24 cm X 25.4 cm (5 in X 6 in x 10 in). Fully enclosed bay.

• Only fixed wing designs.

• Props: multiple allowed.

               REPORT

• Detailed description of the predicted maximum payload to be lifted.

• Methods and results of the performance, stability and control calculations.

• Dynamic analysis performed on the aircraft.

• Any innovative ideas.

             PRESENTATION

• Each team must perform a 10 minutes oral presentation to sell their design.

             FLIGHT

• the aircraft must lift a mass of 3.63 Kg (8 Ib) to qualify.

• the aircraft must make at least one 360 degree turn and land in the same direction as take off.

                 Scoring

                                               Overall score = Flight score + Design score - Penalty points.
